Thing 15

I like the Rollyo tool. It was pretty easy to use, I created one that searches my go to favorite health/medical sites. I am not getting very far with my 23 things. I bought a new laptop to try to help with completing the 23 things while at home and I spend all my time trying to get it to work or taking it in for service. The hard drive was bad and the operating system had to be reinstalled. I had to reinstall my programs, but they will not install since the work....argh!

Thing 14

I created an igoogle page and it is easy to use. I liked choosing the themes. I already had the reader set up and added the National Geographic picture of the day, played around with the calendar, looked at the different tools, and will probably add more to it as time permits.

Thing 13

I really like thing 13, Library Thing. It is simple to use. I keep a written journal of teen books I have read, but this is portable. The widget to link to Library Thing would not work. Copying and pasting the html code just did not work. This happened before on another task and wasted a lot of time, so...I'm simply not going there again! However, here is the link to my page: http://www.librarything.com/home/cfday

Thing 12

The Youth Services for St. Johns County Public Library have a pb & j wiki. It is very nice for coordinating meetings and agendas, just as the video showed. I liked looking at what other libraries are doing with their wikis, especially the subject guide. I added an agenda item for this month's meeting of youth services.

Thing 11

No, I had not forgotten about 23 things. I purchased a new laptop computer and have been busily working on getting it set up to do the things I need it to do. Numerous challenges have been met and conquered. A big thank you to Eric from our MIS department for helping me get my work Outlook to work on my new laptop. Another challenge was getting Flash to work. My Vista computer had a 64 bit browser, which made it run fast, but Flash would not work with it. I had to install a 34 bit browser to watch the neflin23 thing videos. This took me a while to figure out too.

Finally for the thing 11 assignment. I looked at the four social networking sites and yes I did read an article I never would have read otherwise. It was about toxins in children's shampoos and other toiletries posted by Mommylines at mixx I think it was, I can't quite remember which of the four I was reading at the time. Quite scary considering my grandchildren. However the site I could really get lost in was Newsline. This could really consume me and perhaps be counterproductive. I really have to watch myself when it comes to news stories. I shared a story via mixx about Google Voice which is going to allow people to combine all of their phones. It sounds sort of like the google gmail aggregator where people can combine all of their emails.

Thing 10

We still do not have Flash installed on our computers here at the library. There is also a limit as to what we can save and change on our computers. I did not want to install a new toolbar and the bookmarklets option will not work without Flash. I did go through the steps and added delicious to my favorites. I could see the use of delicious because frequently I remember a good site I have used before and can not quite recall it. This tool would help with this occasional challenge.

Thing 9

You have to add a gadget under the layout to post the badge you make using Flickr. I had no problem making the badge but simply copying the code, as the completed badge said did not work. I wasted way too much time trying different things to make it work. A big thanks to Loretta for walking me through this one to finally complete it. My daughters and I use Kodak.com to upload our pictures and share them with each other and friends. I like the Kodak service because it is very easy to use and only those that you choose to share with can see your pictures. You can also choose which albulms to share with each person.

"IM" at last something I have already been using for years! Still, I need to learn all of the little abbreviations.

A big thank you to Loretta for helping me with this. It was not very intuitive! Now I know you copy the code, not the picture! I hope this helps someone else. Tigger by the way is my very sweet cat. For those of you who knew she had emergency surgery, she is just fine now.

young adult books 001

This was a pretty difficult process. I had to create accounts for yahoo, flickr, set up the blog post to my blog from flickr, take a picture, upload it and on and on and on....My photo was taken with the idea of perhaps one day posting descriptions of the new books on my new young adult book shelf. This way I could let young adults know when we have new books in.

Thing 4 RSS feeds

This is one of those tools that I have been intrigued by. My way of keeping up with different technical sites (of all things) has been to periodically visit those sites to see if something has changed. Who knew that RSS feeds were so simple! Thank you NEFLIN for giving me the motivation to finally get started.

Searching blogs

It has been a few days since I tried this out. I compared Technorati and Google. There was a great difference when I searched for library gaming. With Technorati there were five matches and with Google there were pages of good matches. I used quotes for my search. This was a comfortable new skill because the same skill sets were used as for any other search engine. Overtime one would learn how to utilize the strengths of the different blog searches. I have searched blogs in the past using Google and Clusty.com

Finding time to blog- week 2

It is amazing how much the average person can accomplish when forced by circumstances. A mother takes care of her children and her own elderly mother, helps a daughter in difficult circumstances and helps take care of her grandchildren, a father works and coaches little league soccer. It is all in what one values and what necessity requires one to accomplish. Library 2.0 is not optional. These new technologies are not going away and to remain relevant (and employable) one must learn them. I look back to where I spent years working full time and going to school in order to achieve my dream occupation of librarian. To keep this dream come true a reality, I am going to have to update my skills. You bet I will find the time! At least my gaming days are L2, so maybe the rest of it will be fun too!

Signing up process

Signing up and starting a blog was not bad at all. I am looking forward to learning about some of the new technologies.
